Humanity is moving into uncharted territory with the effects of global climate change. Rising temperatures and sea levels are being experienced across the world. This is leading to mass migrations of refugees – fleeing not only drought, famine and flooding but also oppression, persecution or civil war, in many cases aggravated by these environmental problems. My artwork aims to show the movement of people in the face of climate change.
The background layer of the quilt is white cotton, stencilled with my images of refugees, using Markal Paintstiks. The top layer is polyester organza that has been paper laminated with details of images from one of my sketchbooks. The edges and some of the holes have been burnt away with a soldering iron. The quilt has been hand stitched throughout.
