Contemporary Quilt is a special interest group of The Quilters' Guild of the British Isles. All members of The Quilters' Guild are welcome to join this group.
We are a diverse group of quilters, fabric and textile artists working at the cutting edge of quilt making. We like to work in textiles to create innovative and dynamic art. Many of our members have exhibited work nationally and internationally. However we also encourage newer quilters to extend and develop their work. |
What Makes a Contemporary Quilt? This question is often asked, as people do like definitions. Yet it is hard to pin down a genre that is ever evolving.
The Quilters’ Guild sees contemporary quilters as ‘a diverse group of quilters and fabric artists working at the cutting edge of quilt making, creating innovative and dynamic art. They take traditional techniques and push them to their limits by using new fabrics and technology and encouraging original design’. The key words for us are innovative, dynamic and original... Contemporary Quilt members relish the fact that contemporary quilting is whatever you want it to be – it is without boundaries or conventions; it thrives through exploration and experiment. It is open to inspiration, drawn from the natural world, from family and society, from abstract colour and texture, captured in memory, photograph, sketchbook – or straight from the imagination. If you love working with textiles in ways like these then Contemporary Quilt is the group for you. We are part of the Quilters’ Guild – which promotes quiltmaking across the UK, preserves its heritage and works to ensure a vibrant future for the craft – so if you are not already a member you’ll need to join the Guild first. Membership Benefits
Once you become a member of CQ, the degree to which you become involved is down to individual choice; some prefer to create on their own, feeling supported and informed through the popular quarterly newsletter.
The content of this colourful publication is wide ranging, with articles about well known textile artists, with members sharing their quilting discoveries, inspirations, advice and reflections on relevant topics. There are diary dates, book and exhibition reviews, summaries of regional activities, and no distracting adverts. Another way in which discovery and experience can be shared, and questions asked and answered, is via the CQ Facebook page. Here you can upload photographs of pieces, finished or in progress, and comment on what others have posted – CQ members are always positive! It is exciting to be part of such a vibrant online community. Exhibiting
If you are interested in exhibiting, CQ gives you the chance to do this by taking part in a national challenge or by joining a regional group.
Grants are available to support members in local groups who are exhibiting contemporary work. Creative DevelopmentDo you want to develop your design or technical skills? CQ offers a range of challenges – with something to entice you, whatever your level of experience. You can choose to take part in all, some or none.
The annual Journal Quilt Challenge is the ideal way to push your creativity – even when time is short – by making one small piece to a set size each month. Sharing images online encourages inspiration and supportive feedback. The CQ Challenge (every two years) is announced well in advance to give you time to plan and complete a more substantial piece. New CQ members who enter could be eligible for the £100 Anne Tuck Award. Other opportunities include contributing to a themed Suitcase Collection. Housed literally in a suitcase, Collections are hired out to local groups as a conversation starter and to showcase the huge variety of contemporary textile techniques. |
