During last year’s lockdowns, my daughters and their cousins kept in touch by playing Catan online. Originally this was a board game where one’s purpose is to explore the oceans and discover new lands. Then, through collecting resources (sheep, wood, ore, clay, and wheat) and trading with one’s neighbours, one builds communities. The machine stitched hexagons are the size of a Catan tile. At first, the open oceans at the base of the quilt are uncharted. As one progresses up the quilt, resources are gathered and settlements, then villages, towns and finally cities are built. There is hidden treasure!
Procion hand dyed recycled cottons of various sorts (mainly Egyptian cotton, bed sheets and curtain lining) and indigo dyed cotton were used in the ‘undeveloped’ (bottom third) of the quilt. Commercial printed cottons are used predominantly on the ‘developed’ or settled part of the quilt (the top third). The middle section is a mixture as settlement and development starts to take place. Foils, OS map and poly wadding were also used. Machine sewn hexagons, machine embroidery, machine quilting, hand sewing.
