I decided to embrace the concept of ‘Uncharted’ with this quilt, from design source, through material and techniques, to its final construction. Last winter, I caught a glimpse of a hidden woodland, uncharted to me. I knew I had to try and capture the secrecy of the view, and the effect of the winter light on the trees. I chose to use materials and techniques in ways that were new and uncharted to me. Finally, I decided to embrace the consequences of working with a general design concept rather than a completed plan, accepting the unexpected as the quilt evolved
I wanted to venture into uncharted territory by using a textile and construction technique in ways that were new to me. I used florist spider’s web for its translucency and shimmer, which I dyed with transfer dyes. I have never used it on its own for a whole quilt before. Continuing with the ‘Uncharted’ theme, the quilt was constructed following an idea but no set pattern: strips of differently dyed textile were appliquéd to the two backgrounds, with a final top layer applied to each side. The whole was quilted using the tendrils from the final layer on each side.
