Sheila Alink-Brunsdon Uncharted Image of a Fugue in Homage to Paul Klee
I am a fan of the art of Paul Klee and particularly like his Painting Music series. He developed an ‘orchestration of colour’ and this challenge seemed the perfect opportunity to use a lovely range of smooth and slubbed silks from my stash. Music has its own language and transcribing what I hear – Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier – Prelude and Fugue – into the medium of shapes, texture and colour hopefully portrays the mood, tempo and joy that I hear. My colours are intended to display the major key of the music. Since the back will be as visible as the front, I have chosen to produce my own interpretation of ‘Uncharted’, echoing perspectives of wild forest.
Silk shapes machine appliquéd onto Vilene-backed black cotton. Background machine quilted with black cotton thread. Machined satin stitch in contrasting blue demonstrating shapes of sounds. The backing was white cotton mono-printed in white and burnt umber acrylic paint then over dyed with indigo Procion dye. The edges of the main piece are faced with black fabric. The edges of the sample were bound originally with red fabric but I changed my mind on seeing the result.
