Finding it very difficult to visualise the negative nature of this theme, I chose to explore the language surrounding the concept of ‘Uncharted’. A piece of white cotton was my blank page. My words were composed of assorted grey cotton prints, used with a simple sans serif font. One print was used for each word. These were applied with fusible web. The whole piece was layered with organza on top, then onto a firm wadding. The letters were then individually stitched around by machine.
With words on both sides of the piece, it was hard to work out where I could quilt without stitching over the letters on the other side. I wanted the words to be the stand out feature, the quilting to be purely practical and not intrusive. I opted for a large stipple to hold things together. The edges of the piece were then bound with grey print cotton. Plain white cotton, assorted grey cotton prints. Fused shadow appliqué, machine quilting with Isacord 40 embroidery thread.
