Nautical maps are known as Charts, so when I saw the challenge title, I immediately thought that cutting up then reconfiguring my own sailing charts would make them ‘Uncharted’. As I was working with paper in lieu of fabric, and taking the work of Jennifer Collier as inspiration, using a Japanese folded technique seemed appropriate, the quilting equivalent of origami. Drifting colour changes from yellow to white reflect the chart variations from land (yellow) to deep water (white) via marsh and shallows. The windows, seen altogether from a distance, show a pictorial image of sea and shore, intermingled with chartlets of places that I have sailed to and so have special meaning for me.
Dutch nautical loose leaf waterproof paper charts cut up and manipulated using a Japanese folded patchwork technique and then hand-stitched back together in a different configuration using cotton thread. The ‘windows’ are filled with an image taken from the front cover of the chart pack seen as a mosaic and also small chartlets of places in Dutch waters.
