The inspiration behind the hanging was a few months in early 2021. A Victorian pipe under my home had burst and flooded my basement. The builders who we hired to repair it took a long time, which was very frustrating and stressful. It linked to the theme of ‘Uncharted’ as the whole thing was unexpected and we didn’t know how big the scale of the problem was and how long it would take. There was no proper plan and we had to take things day by day. My neighbours were excellent, aiding us a great deal with ideas and practical support. They helped highlight the community spirit that has increased for everyone during the pandemic. This is why I decided to call this hanging Community.
I used calico and cotton fabrics, cotton threads, old gloves and beads. I used machine stitch. By hand, I used slip stitch and blanket stitch. The gloves were mine and from family, when they had lost one or didn’t want to wear them anymore. I had always thought I could stitch them into something! I wanted to use gloves to represent helping hands in local communities.
