What lies beneath the surface of water is unknown, impervious to full exploration or understanding, layers of incomprehension. We catch distorted glimpses and try to make sense of them. Fragile fragments and scraps of antique quilts (some leftover from previous CQ challenges) are tacked together with an incomplete lattice, referencing the gridlines of a map. The top sheer layer, while protecting the damaged fabrics beneath, shifts and moves, partially obscuring and revealing, giving a sense of mystery.
Fragments of tattered and frayed antique quilts patched together and tacked onto backing of vintage French linen tea towels, a recycled sheer silk chiffon scarf stitched over the top. All fabrics over-dyed with indigo including arashi shibori techniques. Hand stitched with cotton quilting threads.
