The largest uncharted region of our planet is the ocean. My ‘Uncharted’ is an impressionistic interpretation of the many depths and hidden flora and fauna that are as yet undiscovered. The different media used each add a layer of obfuscation and depth and invite the viewer to try and look beneath. The quilting flows across the surface suggesting the movement of the tides.
Materials: white cotton fabric first ice-dyed to give a watery background. This was then screen printed with thickened Procion dyes which sink into the fabric, then overprinted using some screen printing inks which sit on the surface and provide a semi-opaque layer of colour. Bonded sheer organza shapes were applied and stitched to give filters of colour. Transfoils were added on top to give some glitter and the suggestion of electric fauna found in the ocean depths. Finally, small slivers of glitter film provide the brightest highlights. Machine quilted.
