The piece was inspired by the fabrics! I was determined not to buy any new materials for this challenge. I had a long thin strip of indigo and green arashi shibori and a smaller section with shibori moons. The combination of the two made me think of space, so much of it uncharted. The strange glow created by the ripples of green in the fabric seemed luminous. I added beads and sequins to represent stars twinkling. The back of the quilt features cloudy skies – I added some surface stitch to remind us that even in Covid times, clouds have silver linings.
The quilt top is cotton, Procion dyed and then over dyed with indigo using shibori techniques – the main part is arashi shibori using a drainpipe; the bottom section uses stitched resist. The backing is also indigo dyed cotton. The wadding is cotton/polyester mix and the quilt was machine quilted and faced. The front of the quilt is embellished with beads and sequins. The back has some surface stitch using silver thread.
