My inspiration was the plight of those who decide to make the treacherous journey over uncharted waters to a possibly better life. Over 300 asylum seekers have died taking the perilous journey across the Channel in the past 20 years. I wanted to record those lives, each orange spot representing a life jacket and a life lost.
I made several silk screens and printed plain white cotton with Procion dyes. I then used a paper lamination method (taught by Christine Chester) which combines free machining, tissue paper and gesso. I then embroidered it with French knots and appliquéd specks of ripstop.
