Khurshid Bamboat Will Our Lives Ever Be the Same Again
2020 was a year of mixed emotions for everyone due to Covid-19 – an uncharted event. During lockdown, an online paper lamination course with Christine Chester inspired me to use this technique. This quilt is a ‘narrative’ showcasing what occurred throughout the world and how we pulled together. For the back, I used the finest Lutradur on which suitable words were screen printed; it proved an inspired idea. Not only did it work in harmony with the hexagons but it retained the fragility and integrity of the piece. The rest, as they say, is history.
Newspaper cuttings about Covid-19 were used to make paper laminated fabric, with polyester voile and matte medium. Hexagon shapes were cut and hand sewn together to make up the front – a lengthy but mindful process. I liked the idea of using a traditional technique but with a modern slant. Fine Lutradur, screen printed with my own Thermofax screens, was used for the back. The two pieces were joined by ties, using red and black threads. The top had to be straight but the sides and bottom edges will remain true to the hexagon shape.
