The Warlingham borehole, in Surrey, was commissioned by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in July 1956 and was completed in 1958. It is 5,000’ deep. Boreholes are drilled for the construction and oil industry to find out what the ground conditions are at a particular site. The drilling records, together with rock exposed at the ground surface, are used to interpret the geology between the known points. Each borehole drilled provides further information about the depths of geological strata, enabling more accurate maps to be drawn of the ground beneath our feet, and of the ocean floor.
Hand dyed and commercial fabric. The colours of the fabrics have been chosen to approximate to the colours used for the different strata on geological maps. Machine piecing, machine stitching, free machine stitching and quilting.
