I love crosswords, word puzzles and anagrams so as soon as I saw the title of the challenge ‘Uncharted’, my brain was busy thinking of all the different words that can be extracted from those nine letters – well over 100! I decided the banner would make a bigger impact by having words on the back as well as the front. My friend Morgaine Taylor helped me to put together the ‘stanzas’ on the front of the quilt.
It took me a long time to decide how to create the words on the front of my banner. I tried several techniques but decided in the end that doing each ‘stanza’ separately using Steam-a-Seam was the safest way in case I made a mistake and would have had to start the whole thing again. I used batik fabric which was ideal for camouflaging the appliquéd ‘stanzas’. In order for the front to remain pristine, there was no way I could stitch the words on the back so decided that stencilling was the best way to do that. The banner has three layers with wadding in the middle.
