A close family member recently experienced a psychotic episode and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Thankfully, with the aid of drugs he recovered. But for him and the family it was a completely new experience, both negotiating the psychiatric system and dealing with the stress it necessitated. For us, it was uncharted territory. The colours represent the journey from the darkness of his paranoia to the positive realisation that the hallucinations and voices had been all in his head. Words from the diary I kept at the time, describing the various stages of the illness, are layered on the background.
Background painted with thickened dye with screen and Thermofax printing. Free machine quilted with raw edged appliqué added on top.
