My inspiration came from words found in the dictionary definition of ‘Uncharted’, among them ‘space’. This led me to thinking about the uncharted areas on maps, I was particularly drawn to our great oceans where parts are undiscovered, where there is the mystery of what might be on the ocean bed. On the other hand, there are uncharted methods of which the outcome is unknown; in this case, it is breakdown printing, a first for me.
Screens were prepared with objects and dyes and long pieces of cotton fabric were printed using textile medium so that the images on the screen broke down. Well, that was the plan; in reality it took much longer to breakdown than I anticipated. A decision was made to cut them up so as to form a grid (chart), using raw edged appliqué onto the background. The reverse was printed with a Thermofax screen and the letters were applied by raw edged appliqué. The whole was machine quilted.
