When you look at a bird, you wonder how it can possibly fly; but against all odds it does. That’s why I chose to portray a young girl watching birds with her arms outstretched like wings. As a parent you pick them up when they stumble and fall, then be the breeze that enables them to lift off. The young girl is my daughter: She’s the girl whose teacher told her she wasn’t considered able enough to join the triple science stream. But she was brought up to believe that being dyslexic does not have to be a barrier to doing well. This summer she obtained her PhD in Sustainable Chemistry. That girl always wants to have the last word. who doesn’t wish they could fly? take a chance embrace the unknown faster higher wings spread wide feel the breeze enjoy the flight
The wholecloth quilt is cotton sateen, hand painted with thickened Procion dyes. The girl and birds were hand drawn and used to create hand cut freezer paper stencils which were then used with Markal oil Paintstiks to create the images. I used hand and machine quilting.
