My life was not planned in advance (except that I was never going to teach) so I had no chart to guide me. Things just happened, from Brownies and Guides through singing, sewing, sailing, a science degree, researching molluscicides, marrying, becoming a potter and a beekeeper to eventually teaching patchwork, pottery and sailing. Two children arrived; some of the boats represent them. Yet throughout there has been music. My feet are shown symbolically travelling through these experiences, from childhood playing in the fields (bottom) to today (top) still making pots, textiles and playing music.
Starting with two lengths of fabric and some bias strips side by side, I painted them with liquid Procion dye for a blended effect which increased while drying vertically. Both pieces were treated as the front. I cut screen stencils from d-c-fix’s transparent static window privacy film. This washes easily for printing in several colours, both sides simultaneously, with thickened Procion dyes. I used Markal paint sticks and stencils for my size 2 feet then layered and quilted the piece with different coloured threads, finally binding it with dyed bias strips.
