Lockdown presented an opportunity to create a new garden after 40 years of neglect. This was an uncharted experience for a non-gardener. The process of making the quilt also became uncharted. My original design went through its own evolution, from patchwork with straight seams to curved, appliqué done after quilting, with plants as outlines so that patchwork wasn't covered. The quilt also created its own curved sides: it was in charge! There are six sections: Soil with roots, Foliage, Spring, two Summers, and borrowed Landscape of village church and trees. The appliqué outlines and batiks create an interesting reverse side.
The patchwork and appliqué are cotton, including plains and commercial batiks. Bonded appliqué used Bondaweb. The threads used for appliqué and quilting are machine embroidery threads with Bottom Line on the bobbin. For the couching, I used hand embroidery perle. Batting is Dream Polyester. All machine stitched. Free cut curved piecing. Straight stitch quilting along the contours of the piecing. Zigzag stitched appliqué edges and couching.
