For ‘Uncharted’, my first thought was to link with sailing, water, islands and holidays. From there, I decided to try out an Indigo kit as a technique that was untried by me – I had done indigo and shibori in workshops with prepared vats but never prepared my own vat, so this was an uncharted task. The varying colours of the indigo with a slash of white reminded me of the landscapes in the Arctic. Also, the range of patterns brought back many memories of other rugged islands I have visited on my travels; these are now on the reverse.
All cotton and linens dyed at home in an indigo vat. Some fabrics were acquired table linen and others were unloved Procion dyed mistakes from my ‘Wet & Wild’ course many years ago. Prior to dyeing they were either stitched, folded, tied, clamped or crumpled, using shapes, buttons, beads, drain pipes or net bags. I included various threads and linen buttons for possible embellishment. The results were then pieced using the random, sometimes uneven, designs achieved. The back was printed with the island names using a Thermofax screen. Machine quilted with straight and free stitching using variegated threads. Edges bound.
