My initial interpretation of the word ‘Uncharted’ was a timeline and so I made it personal, hence the title The story so far... There’s some optimistic space for what comes next! Many years ago, I created a method of constructing a painterly background using fused fabric. I cut colourful strips with a pinked rotary cutter and worked on parchment paper with an iron. The gradual fading of the colour towards the top of the piece is symbolic of ageing. The background fabric is constructed from batiks and Balis. They are tightly woven fabrics and therefore less likely to fray and they come in a lovely range of intense colours and mixed tones. I add a fusible layer to all the fabrics before cutting strips with a pinked rotary cutter. These strips are used to construct the background by overlapping and fusing with an iron.
