Carol Dowsett Explored and Undiscovered = Uncharted
Focusing on my garden plants, including weeds, an idea came to my mind and I decided to go with it! I wanted to show that the luscious and beautiful plants that I grow cannot be overpowered by weeds... So I used the wider panel to show the dominant beauty and colours of my plants, versus the narrower and starker strip for the overpowering weeds. Using techniques and ideas that I had not fully explored before and with the then undiscovered use of emulsion paint test pots, painted onto calico, my idea became reality.
I used my own drawings printed onto transfer paper and ironed onto my own dyed silk and cottons for the wider panel which is machine quilted and with hand stitched embroidery details. In stark contrast and with no detailed stitching, is the narrow painted calico strip with hand drawn and painted weeds. Flower images are scanned onto transfer paper and ironed onto the reverse.
