The oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, and more than 80% of them remain unexplored. In the deepest of the ocean trenches it was assumed conditions would not support animal life, but largely unmanned explorations have revealed strange and amazing species that can actually withstand such inhospitable environments. Many of these creatures have only been seen by researchers remotely, from submersible vehicles equipped with high-resolution cameras which are adapted to withstand the enormous pressures encountered at such depths. I find these life forms fascinating and present a sample of the smaller creatures that inhabit these uncharted spaces.
Hand dyed cotton used for the background which is machine quilted. Organzas, satins and voiles are fused and cut using heat and then appliquéd by machine stitch. Appliqué stitching on the reverse of the quilt is done with a contrasting colour thread in the bobbin so it is visible. Embellishment is by done by hand, using beads, sequins and Inktense paints. Labels on the reverse are printed.
