Twice a day, the sea obliterates patterns made in sand while laying down another pattern by the force of its currents. I spend a lot of time walking on Porth Kidney at many times of the day, weathers and tides. I am fascinated by the ever-changing patterns; nature is so inspirational. My quilt is based on paper laminations of sand patterns and the marks left by birds, animals and man. Paper lamination allows me to partially break up the image, reflecting the fragility and limited longevity of the imprints. My piece is based on paper laminations, on silk organza, of photographs I have taken while walking on the beach. Two organza paper laminated layers are backed together, with paper laminated fine linen between where appropriate. The length of the piece is then linked with a mixture of machine quilting and hand embroidery. Footprints were embroidered where visible giving an outline of the image on the reverse, possibly in conflict with images on that side. The semitranslucent paper laminated fabric allows intriguing views through to the image behind from both sides.
