What would our world be like without trees? The quilt is inspired by many media images of burnt grey areas of forest, trees cut down and stacked log piles with almost no green growth. This is a visual statement of the danger we face on the Earth if we continue like this – trees produce the vital oxygen we need to survive.
I use recycled fabric as much as I can, here, cotton sheeting and an old tablecloth, dyed with Procion dyes. The colour is grey, drab to emphasise my statement, and it is the colour of ashes. The grey background was lightened in places with patches of mono-printing as ashes are not all grey. Two stencils were prepared for the 'logs' and acrylic colour applied. Additional colour was added with a small bundle of moss from the garden. This printed green represents the tiny amount of growth that might flourish between the logs; it might even be moss that survives. The machine quilting echoed lines of the stencilled design. Calico backing, 80/20 wadding and a faced edge finish.
