My father came to England as a German Jewish refugee in 1936. By the time I was born he was well established, not just surviving but prospering in the UK. But records of his internment as an alien in an unfamiliar country highlight how precarious those early years had been, with short-term visas repeatedly expiring and being extended. The text is taken from his file at the National Archives. I have chosen the most poignant phrases for the front. On the back are extracts from the full documents.
Front: text block printed on silk tussah with silk mousseline overlays. Back: commercial digitally printed cotton from a montage created in Affinity Designer. Hand quilted with thick cotton.
