Granddaughter Anna visited me from Germany and showed me the portfolio of work that had gained her an offer to study art and graphic design at a university in Berlin. I was bowled over by her inspirational talent and asked if she would let me use pieces as the starting point for my ‘Uncharted’ quilt. She agreed and I developed ideas from her original sketches. The theme was her uncharted journey through life – an imagined travelogue of what she does and where she goes. The plan is to give it to her and add comments on the stepping stones as time passes.
Cotton and silk/linen mix of fabrics, handdyed in a colour family. The stones were cut and bonded to the base cotton. Each piece was machine blanket stitched and then hand embroidered to add definition and additional detail. Hand-dyed silk chiffon was bonded and stitched in areas representing ‘placid, peaceful lakes of rest, breaks in her journey’ with free machine quilting. A small amount of invisible stitching was added to hold the quilt together but keep the backing free of obvious stitches.
