THE NEW NORMAL
Inspiration
I wanted to explore the impact of Covid 19 on our lives and how it has fragmented society over the past few months, more effectively than anything else we have experienced in recent decades.
The crazy piecing reflects the fragmentation of society caused by Covid 19 with the single colour emphasising the unifying effect of the disease on our broken family units.
New words have been introduced into our language, while existing words have been given new meaning.
This quilt, like the pandemic, is unfinished with space to add the final death toll at the top of the quilt.
Materials and techniques
A selection of plain and printed fabrics, crazy pieced with the colours moving from dark at the bottom, to plain white and cream fabrics at the top of the quilt. The quilt top was then hand dyed with Procion dye.
The words were discharged from the base fabric using dishwasher liquid and the virus has been English Paper Pieced using hand dyed cotton and appliquéd on to the quilt top.
The quilt top has been backed with another piece of hand dyed cotton and then quilted with simple horizontal lines, with the viruses breaking up the lines of quilting.
