ORANGE FLASH AND PURPLE RAIN
Inspiration
The meaning of fragmentation as the disintegration of norms regulating behaviour, thought and social relationships, aptly describe the year 2020 for the human race.
My go-to place of comfort is the sea. Mostly it just flows peacefully, occasionally there are stormy days, but it also can have major disruptions.
My title is from newspaper headlines, the orange after mass blooms of tiny plankton, the purple a mega swarm of jellyfish. These temporarily harshly interrupted, but did not become the "new normal".
My design reflects the before, then the severe disruption, followed by a return to life as usual.
Materials and techniques
This quilt is constructed of self-dyed cotton fabrics. It has been rotary-cut freehand in both straight(ish) lines and curved ones.
Using cotton wadding and a selection of cotton threads it was machine pieced and quilted.
The buttons used for embellishment were originally cream with grey lines, they have been coloured with transfer dye.
