Glass Ceilings
Almost forty years since the Equal Pay Act, the Equity Bill seeks to redress continuing discrimination. Using techniques with women's work, I wanted to convey the idea of glass ceilings in a visually interesting way.
The traditional quilt block Attic Window was used to suggest 3D spaces, most containing outlined figures pushing upwards. One breakthrough brings movement to an otherwise static design, with appliqued fragments flying free like birds. Overlying paper lamination, utilizing appropriate newsprint hints at office blocks or the city. The barely perceptible 'voices' of the women are printed on Lutradur then stitched into the border. Materials include artist-dyed and commercial cottons, Lutradur, polyester and newsprint. Machine pieced. machine and hand quilted. Back |
