HOTCHPOTCH COLLAGE
Inspiration
I took various elements of the coverlet, hence the title 'Hotchpotch,' to make a collage. The Maltese cross was randomly printed on the background.
All the elements were raw edged appliqué except for the hexagons. The three letters for Edwin, Mary and Bloomfield contain hand written words from the coverlet. I also included the date of the coverlet. A shape from the tassel border was used to fan round the hexagons. Two of the broderie-perse flower shapes were interpreted in blues. Red squares echo the outline of the coverlet squares.
Materials and techniques
Commercial and hand dyed cottons
Stencilling and block printing
Fused applique
Machine and hand stitching
