MEMORY BOXES
Inspiration
I was drawn to the coverlet's dominant red shapes, the use of text, and hexagons. The coverlet is about memories, so I further explored my family memories Journal Quilt project of 2017.
The red “boxes” contain scraps of family handwriting with the stitched half-boxes representing fading memories and are quilted with a stitch resembling Morse Code which my father used proficiently. Curves in the vertical borders reference the border swags of the Bloomfield coverlet.
Materials and techniques
Cotton fabric
Gelli-plate printing with fabric paints
Digital printing on pre-treated fabric
Machine quilting including use of built-in sewing machine patterns
