SIMPLY THE ROSE
Inspiration
Amongst the scattered snippets of floral prints are roses, reminding me of a project, collected for but not completed, exploring the manifold ways in which roses have been interpreted on textiles. I set tiny traditional prints against larger, cut out graphic renderings, particularly from the 1950s, and included modern photographic and loose splashy images. The whole is bound with fabric painted to match the Coverlet's inner pink edge; this was printed with tiny Rennie Mackintosh roses in celebratory gold. The quilting lines echo the Coverlet's squares in both colour and crookedness. The title derives from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “There is simply the rose; it is perfect in every moment of its existence.”
