ROSES ARE RED
Inspiration
From the coverlet, I was drawn to the bands of red and pink printed fabric bordering some of the text blocks and the individual appliqued floral sprays.
I used these two elements as symbols of the love that Mary put into every stitch of this quite poignant design. I like to design around my own fabric stash, so produced a selection of my own fabrics with floral and textured motifs within this colour range. The grid nature of my design contrasts with the fluidity
of the embroidered floral rose motifs.
Materials and techniques
Cotton fabrics mono printed, stamped, stencilled and painted using a Gelli plate
Acrylic and silk paints
Machine piecing and applique
Free machine embroidery and quilting
