SEA URCHIN FRAGMENTS
Inspiration
Beachcombing at Bamburgh, Northumberland I spotted a small fragment of Sea Urchin Shell. As is often the case, I then became blind to everything else and completely focussed on finding more of the tumbled pinky purple pieces. I am not sure if the pieces I found are fragments from the same shell, still grouped together despite the action of sea and tide. Their colours, shape and surface vary, and I found them more interesting as a set of fragments than if I had found an intact shell.
Materials and techniques
The quilt top and shell fragments are Linen Charlotte, the wadding is wool/viscose and the backing is cotton. The shell fragments were Procion dyed, the shapes and bumps having initially been marked out with soy wax resist. The bumps on the shells were embroidered before each piece was layered like a mini quilt, stitched, and turned through a cut in the backing. I machine free motion quilted the whole quilt before finally stitching on the ‘shell’ fragments by hand.
