SHATTERED CONTENTMENT
Inspiration
My quilt is inspired by the feelings of Lockdown. Our contented life in our sociable village has been shattered, with communications limited to electronic means. I have reflected this by making a quilt loosely based on a map of the village, using Alicia Merrett's "Mapping the Imagination" techniques. I cut this quilt into fragments and laid them on a dark background on top of more wadding and backing. I stitched the fragments in place, and free-motion quilted the gaps with words linked to the communications used now - WhatsApp, text, email, Zoom and so on.
Materials and techniques
I used my own and commercial hand-dyed cotton fabrics, with some commercial prints. The waddings used are 80/20. The quilt is completely pieced and quilted by machine. I pieced the "map", laid it on wadding and heavily quilted it before cutting it into fragments. The fragments were satin-stitched to the background, and a few lines of extra quilting added to anchor them using Wonderfil Invisifil, mostly "in the ditch". The majority of the quilting is free-motion, with some walking-foot quilting. The threads used for quilting are mainly variegated rayons and cottons. The final quilt is finished with a facing.
