Mandy Winter
UNDER A TURQUOISE SKY
Inspiration
The inspiration for my quilt came from the fabric itself, which I printed out in my garden on a sunny day during lockdown. To print the fabric, I used the breakdown method of silk screen printing. As I pushed my thickened dye through the screen the design was created by the breaking down or fragmenting of the dried dye placed on the back of the screen. There is no way to know what pattern will be created and that unknown quality is what appeals to me. The design was created intuitively, assembling the blocks onto a design wall.
Materials and techniques
PFD cotton
Procion MX dyes/soda ash/urea/Manutex
Silk screen/squeegee
60wt Mettler threads for piecing
50wt Superior threads for quilting
80/20 wadding
Polyester/cotton recycled sheet for backing
Domestic sewing machine
I printed the cotton, using a silk screen and the breakdown method of printing. Having washed and dried the fabric to set the print, I cut, pieced and then re-cut strips to create a series of blocks which I then assembled using my design wall until I was happy with the overall look. I used simple straight line quilting before adding the binding and hanging sleeve.
