STRONGER TOGETHER
Inspiration
Individual, community and global identities are fragmented. Identity lanyards symbolise fragmentation, confirming membership of a specific group. Equally, lanyards and other identity markers, such as passports, exclude others at a glance.
Assertion and celebration of our common humanity can transcend these partial, often divisive, identities. Walter Payton, a black American footballer, inspired many with his claim "we are stronger together than we are alone", which has underpinned many social/political campaigns. Jo Cox, MP for a multiracial English constituency, argued passionately "we have more in common than that which divides us." Her assassin described her as a traitor to white people.
Materials and techniques
Materials: Repurposed linen and identity lanyard ribbons.
Natural dyes: linen soaked in green tea and iron; screen printing with cochineal and iron dye paste; appliqué with logwood dyed linen.
Techniques: Screen printing; appliqué, machine quilting
