CONGLOMERATE
Inspiration
Of all fieldwork-encountered rock, conglomerates fascinate me most. Coarse sandstones, they contain fragments torn from earlier landscapes, rounded in long-vanished seas and rivers. The most captivating is Wester Ross’ Torridonian, 1,000 million years old; Its subtle pinkish-red indicates arid origin. Floods swept fragments of Britain's basement, Lewisian gneiss (2 billion years older) across deserts into lakes and rivers. Quartz grains surround pebbles of surprising colour and pattern. Today, the Torridonian is itself being fragmented by forces, water, wind and ice, releasing these pebbles to be rolled anew. Eventually, the beach sediment will become another conglomerate, entombing fragments carrying Earth’s history.
Materials and techniques
My own photographs, taken at Aultbea on Loch Ewe in Wester Ross, 'developed' in Lightroom and then digitally printed; painting with Neocolor II water soluble pastels, fabric paint and acrylic paint; decolouring spray; appliqué and other design elements composed of supporting hand dyed fabrics plus purchased batik printed ones.
Machine quilting (some free), seed stitch and with some beads for highlights.
