Out of the Elements
The inspiration came from carvings or sculptures that appear to emerge from large, rough rock faces. the stylized faces were developed from drawings in my sketchbooks of African masks and artifacts. The images are set in a rock face and the faces are breaking through the natural rocky surface to take on their own shape, form and identity.
The design was machine quilted on white cotton with white cotton thread. When this was completed it was painted with Procion dyes. Extra colour was added using Markal oil sticks. Back |
