PARTITION - 1947
Inspiration
I was born in what was British India. It Is the perfect example of fragmentation to showcase what happened in 1947 when the British agreed to allow India to be independent. The 'famous' Radcliffe Line was drawn in record time - West & East Pakistan with India in between. Pakistan achieved their independence on 14th August and India on 15th August. According to historians, 14 million people were displaced and between 700,000 to 2 million people died. I have illustrated the partition by inserting red fabric that also symbolises the blood that was shed.
Materials and techniques
Hand dyed cotton applied on linen. Made in three sections to show how India was partitioned. Appliqué from the back and raw edge appliqué. Machine and hand embroidery.
