Out from the Dark (Artificial Light)
The idea of breaking through darkness for everyone, allowing a continuation of light for whatever purpose is central to the design. Light is assumed to flow softly from the candle's flame or harshly via electricity conduits from the shaded electric light bulb. Both sources of artificial light are separated by the zigzag of natural lighting. The beehives suggest links to the candle wax and the pylons are reflections of the candle shape. The quilt is essentially dark to remind us of the progression in the development of electric light and to allow us to celebrate the scientific discovery every day.
The technique is counterchange, with the pieces bonded to a backing, then organza in the colours - first bright yellow to lighten the design, then black to subdue it - it is added to the top of the sandwich before it is machine quilted. Back |
