SVALBARD
Inspiration
The inspiration for Fragmentation is reflected on many levels at this moment in time. The idea for Svalbard was started before lockdown, as climate change, with the melting of the Polar ice threatening the existence of the polar bears as the glaciers fragment and the sea ice melts. The construction of the top, using fragments of indigo dyed fabrics, precious in themselves was a worry as I was not able to dye more during lockdown. Increasingly I watched as our world, as we know it, breaks down as the Covid-19 pandemic spreads worldwide.
Materials and techniques
For the construction I used fragments of indigo dyed cotton and pieced them to create an Arctic scene. Fragments of lace were added and free machine quilting to represent the icy textures. The bear is appliqué, floating on the sea ice. Small cuts were made to insert the lace in the sea ice.
