WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS
Inspiration
Life can be difficult - one step forward, two steps back; particularly with respect to mental health, mine and that of my children. These emotions put me in mind of the Annie Lennox song - so many themes of the relationship in the song mirror that of mine with my daughter. This quilt represents this challenging aspect of my life. Many little blue triangles have been patchworked together, showing the cohesion of family; then red footprints applied with my very own feet, the daily struggle. I embellished with hand embroidery and then quilted, ‘glass’ trapped in an organza pocket.
Materials and techniques
A wide range of fabrics from my stash for the blue triangles, not all cotton, some quite challenging including upcycled shirts and wool. Some fabrics have sentimental meaning. Red Fabric paint used to create my footprints - then embroidered around in stranded cotton. Quilted by machine. A pocket of organza contains 'glass' of computer hard-drive fragments and sequins. The quilt is bound in red fabric from a charity shop cotton kimono.
