Tangent

I selected an area from a drawing of a gannet which I had in my sketchbook, “The Thin Blue Line” being the marking on the bird’s beak.  The base is a heavy purple cotton fabric.  The blue lines and the brown lines are drawn with Markal paintsticks, a new technique for me.  Hand-dyed cotton fabric and Angelina fibre are incorporated in the design as a contrast to the main area of composition.  Free machine embroidery and quilting complete the design.  The quilting patterns are used to suggest the texture of the bird’s beak.  The feather designs are derived from my interest in North Country quilting.
