Life Lines ll
Life Lines ll was inspired by the invention of the microscope, which eventually led to a breakthrough in scientific and medical knowledge. Even today, in a remote Guyanan village, the use of a simple microscope leads to an accurate diagnosis of malaria type.
I enjoy working with flowing, organic shapes and the design here is not of any specific microscopic slide but an amalgam of cell types and my distortion of them. Previously I dye-painted a quilted top and was delighted with the back where the dye seeped through the sewing lines in an unpredictable way. Exploiting this idea further, the dye reminds me of the staining of slides as it isn't completely contained by the machine lines, like the cell walls, but breaks through, giving a translucent look. Machine quilted with trapunto on satinized cotton, dye painted from the back, with a small amount of silk painting on the front. Back |
