BROKEN LINES
Inspiration
Reflecting on “Fragmentation”, I think of things that are broken. Seeing on the world news Coronavirus, Black Lives Matter protests, poverty at home and abroad, climate change and attacks on democracy, I feel there is a breakdown in trust and respect, for people and our environment. I have used reverse appliqué to communicate that while things on the surface may appear to be well, underneath there are cracks, decay, fragmentation. Lines of trust and communication are breaking, and for many, life is fraying at the edges. The faint continuous lines give hope that not all is broken beyond repair.
Materials and techniques
Egyptian cotton top, low water immersion dyed with Procion MX dyes, with reverse appliqué. The fabrics underneath are low water immersion dyed, rust dyed, flour paste crackle dyed, and screen printed. The painted lines are done with Inktense blocks. The piece is machine quilted.
