Touching the Void
My inspiration was the astounding and inspirational story in the book and docu-drama, ‘Touching the Void’ which tells of the incredible courage of two climbers in the Andes, one of whom, with several broken bones in his leg, manages to crawl out of a glacial crevasse and make the journey back to base camp.
Since starting patchwork I have enjoyed discovering some of the infinite variety of ways to use fabric. For this particular work I felt that paint was the correct medium to create an idea of the smoothness of ice, but with the addition of a rougher texture in some areas to create the appearance of a recent snow flurry. The addition of the red Bondaweb applied paint was to link in with the story of the book. The horror of the situation is left to the viewer’s imagination. Cotton sateen, fabric paints. Wholecloth quilting by hand and machine. Back |
