Volcano
I was inspired by images of molten lava discharging from fissures in volcanic rocks.
The quilt is a contrast between hot and cold. Heat is depicted through reds/oranges/yellows created by space dyed natural fibres. Texture has been formed by felting fabrics onto a felt ground. Surrounding areas have been created from strip patchwork and heat distorted sheers. Cooler colours of blues/purples/mauves represent rock surfaces. Quilting follows the lines of the applied sheers. Twin needling is stitched across the strip patchwork which also forms lines of quilting. Threads have been left loose to soften surfaces, add texture and represent vapours rising from the lava. Cotton, man-made sheers. Back |
